EndValueEmpsTargetReservoir

The end value module sets up water values at the end of each decision problem. This ensures that the reservoirs are not emptied at the end of each problem.

The water values are input as an NDArrayTS for each area. They are then distributed over all reservoirs in that area based on a target reservoir method.

See the API documentation for information on input time series and configuration parameters here: EndValueEmpsTargetReservoir.

See the model documentation for more details on the modeling.

Usage

If you use the ltm2trident tool for converting an LTM V10 dataset and it contains water values in the .VVERD files, no further input is necessary. The water values and degree of regulation is converted from the dataset. If the file EmpsSamtap.xml exists, the depletion season start and end times will also be converted.

Depletion and Filling Season

The filling and depletion season requires slightly different strategies. In the filling season the goal is to minimize reservoir spillage, while in the depletion season the goal is to avoid emptying any reservoir too early and end the depletion season with the same risk of spillage for all reservoirs.

The start and end of the depletion season can be set for each area in the logical model. This will affect when the two strategies are applied.

Degree of Regulation

The degree of regulation for each reservoir affects the disaggregation of water values. This value can be either given as an input in the logical model or be computed from reservoir inflows and volume limits.

If the configuration parameter for computing the degree of regulation is set, it will be computed as the ratio of the reservoirs maximum volume and the yearly expected inflow. A larger value thus indicates that the reservoir is more likely to overflow.

Smoothing Between Seasons

The target reservoirs computed just before and just after a change in season can be very different, resulting in a sudden jump in water value layer sizes and power prices. To combat this, layer sizes can be smoothed around the transition point.

Smoothing can be configured through the configuration parameters.
